Research
Leading Industries is currently undertaking research into
the personality styles of rural people.
Data has been collected as part of our extensive leadership development
programs delivered over the past decade with participants completing a simple
Personality Style questionnaire.
The responses provide a score for each individual against each of four
styles being STRATEGIC, TASK, PEOPLE and SPONTANEOUS.
The findings,
based on a sample of 1,000 people, clearly highlight a propensity for rural
people to want to ‘get the job done’ with over 40% of participants scoring
highest in the TASK style. This style is important as the job does
always get done. However, it would
be more effective if those with a focus on the task and getting the job done
were informed by those with a preference for a STRATEGIC approach.
They will put the task in the
context of the big picture and
provide a clear long term direction for the tasks that need to be done. Only 25% of participants scored
highest in this style.
The are two other styles in this model were poorly
represented. The PEOPLE style (18% of participants)
ensures that the social implications of any decision are considered and it also
has a focus on engaging others, having REAL conversations as well as exploring
opportunities and resolving conflicts with the collective good as their
focus. Those with the PEOPLE style will ensure newcomers are welcomed and be able to facilitate
difficult situations.
The final style which is also underrepresented in primary
industries and rural communities is the SPONTANEOUS (16% of participants) style. This group bring energy to a group, are
creative and good problem solvers particularly in a crisis.
A more detailed report is currently being prepared for
presentation at a conference in 2010.
We have found this tool has the potential to inform people
in both their personal and professional life by increasing their self awareness
and their effectiveness. As profile becomes more balanced across all
four styles they are able to deliver at a higher level. Alternatively, by people being aware of
their own style, we have found they are able to build a team with each style
being strongly represented and again the outcomes are significant.
Publication
A book is currently being finalised that will resource
anyone who wants to get the most out of life. It is written in easy ‘grabs’ that will assist people
attending meetings, facilitating a session or simply wanting to be more
effective in their personal, family and work life.
